Linear Technology Noise monitors the current noise and by selecting a resistor size it will provide the best solution for a particular noise amount and other variables such as output ripple voltage and load resistor value. The output current noise is calculated from the load resistor value and capacitor value (either connected to the inverter or across the capacitor). On average the ripple is calculated using the output voltage.
The output voltage is calculated by measuring the output voltage from the inverter after the resistor is loaded into a resistor network. The resistor is also measured with a multimeter.
Input Parameters:
The program takes the following as input to calculate the current noise:
Step 1) resistor value
Step 2) capacitor value (either connected to inverter or across capacitor)
Step 3) output ripple voltage (optional)
Step 4) load resistor value
Step 5) Power supply voltage
Step 6) resistor temperature coefficient.
The program also calculates other parameters that are not included in the above input values. These include the ripple % at the inverter, noise % at the inverter, noise % at the capacitor, noise % across the capacitor and the output voltage ripple (V/A).
See the example below for an example of how the program is set up.
Open Command prompt and run the below script by entering the values for each variable and the order as shown below.
NOTE: You must enter the resistor value and capacitor value into the program manually (otherwise they will be blank). The resistor and capacitor values are entered for three locations in the script. For instance you would enter the resistor values into step 2, the capacitor values in step 3 and the resistor values in step 4.
You can enter the capacitor value and resistor values in any order and the program will still work correctly.

What’s New in the Linear Technology Noise?

Linear Technology Noise is a program designed to assist circuit designers in selecting LTC devices for various kinds of circuits.
The Linear Technology Noise program includes two versions, which give different types of output based on the design option selected.
In the first version, called the “Noise Figure”, only the Noise Figure is calculated. The Noise Figure for an LTC device is defined in terms of its Noise Figure and Differential Nonlinearity (DNL).
The Noise Figure for a LTC device can be determined by either the manufacturer or by our calculations.
Differential Nonlinearity of an LTC device is a measurement of the degree to which a device has nonlinear distortion components to its output signal.
The Differential Nonlinearity is one measurement of the 1/f noise of a device and is a more important measurement than Noise Figure for many applications.
In the second version, called the “Output Power”, two values are calculated.
The first value is the Noise Figure and the second value is the Signal Amplifier:
Noise Figure = Noise plus DNL of an Op Amp (with bias current chosen to make this measurement)
Signal Amplifier = Gain of an Op Amp (with bias current chosen to make this measurement)
The output filter which is chosen to calculate the Noise Figure may affect the output power values. For example, in a typical filtered op amp circuit, the output filter will change the bandwidth and thus affect the results. This will be considered further in later sections where the two options are compared.
This report presents a generalized version of Linear Technology Noise. The application includes a compact GUI and integrates a set of LTC devices and the user can change the calculation parameters in order to get the best LTC device for a certain circuit.
Linear Technology Noise is a common problem in circuit design; it is a manifestation of the fact that the input referred noise of amplifiers is nonlinear.
The output filter of the device that is used to determine the noise figure of a device is generally not ideal in the sense that it contains a pole at some point within the frequency range of the device. Thus the filter causes a 1/f rise to the frequency response (anti-aliasing filter).
The 1/f rise of the filter changes the bandwidth of the device. This lowers the noise figure of the device. If the filter is very high-pass, then the effect is not great and the noise figure remains unchanged.
